Florida Mosquito Season Intensifies as Tampa Climbs Orkin’s 2026 Most Mosquito-Infested Cities List (featured)

As summer approaches and mosquito season ramps up across the United States, several Florida metros are once again drawing national attention for high mosquito activity. According to Orkin’s newly released 2026 Mosquito Cities List, three Florida cities ranked among the top 20 worst mosquito hotspots in America, reinforcing the challenges newcomers and longtime residents face during the state’s warm and humid months.

Tampa posted one of the most notable changes on the list, climbing two spots from last year’s rankings as mosquito populations intensified across the region. Meanwhile, Miami and Orlando also remained inside the top 20 despite sliding slightly lower in the national rankings.

The annual report from pest control company Orkin is based on the number of new residential mosquito treatments performed between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026. The rankings offer a snapshot of where mosquito activity has become especially problematic as rising temperatures and frequent rainfall create ideal breeding conditions.

For many people relocating to Florida from northern states, mosquito season can be one of the biggest lifestyle adjustments after moving to the Sunshine State. Florida’s subtropical climate allows mosquito populations to remain active for much of the year, particularly from late spring through early fall.

Mosquitoes thrive in standing water commonly found in retention ponds, backyard containers, clogged gutters, bird baths, and tropical landscaping features common throughout Florida communities. The combination of heat, humidity, and afternoon rainstorms can rapidly accelerate mosquito breeding cycles during the summer months.

Public health officials also continue monitoring mosquito-borne illnesses, including West Nile virus, dengue fever, and Eastern equine encephalitis. While most mosquito bites are simply an annoyance, experts encourage residents to remain proactive during peak season.

For homebuyers and newcomers, mosquito control has increasingly become part of evaluating Florida neighborhoods and outdoor lifestyles. Communities with extensive water features, preserve land, golf courses, or dense vegetation may require more frequent pest management efforts throughout the year.

Tampa’s rise in the rankings reflects broader growth trends across Central and Southwest Florida, where rapid development and population expansion continue intersecting with the state’s natural wetland ecosystems. At the same time, Miami and Orlando remain perennial mosquito hotspots due to their tropical climates and dense urban populations.

Experts recommend Florida residents take several precautions during mosquito season, including:

    •    Eliminating standing water around homes

    •    Using EPA-approved insect repellents

    •    Wearing long sleeves during dawn and dusk hours

    •    Maintaining pool areas and gutters

    •    Scheduling professional mosquito treatments when necessary

Despite the seasonal nuisance, many residents say the tradeoff is part of living in a state known for year-round outdoor recreation, waterfront living, and warm weather.

For out-of-state buyers considering a move to Florida, understanding seasonal weather patterns and pest management routines can help ease the transition into life in the Sunshine State.
